Rickenbacker seized the suicidal colonel by the shoulder and Cherry and Whittaker helped drag the pair back into the raft. Mortally ill from drinking seawater, he slipped away two nights later after a last long, mournful sigh.Ī few nights later, Rickenbacker awoke when Adamson, in agony from his terribly blistered skin, pitched over the side. The half jigger of water per day per man could not save Sergeant Kaczmarczyk, however. The ecstatic men wrung out the rainwater from their clothes into buckets. In moments, the rafts felt the storm’s buffet and rain poured down in sheets. The sick, exhausted men flailed the sea with their paddles. “Let’s go after it!” shouted Rickenbacker. Rain splattered the parched upturned faces-and then stopped as the storm moved along. That night, the sea grew turbulent under gusting winds. Although not a churchgoer, Rickenbacker did believe in a “Great Power above” and carried a crucifix in the inner pocket of his coat. It was no coincidence, insisted Rickenbacker, that the two-course dinner had arrived immediately after they had prayed. Within minutes they pulled in a small mackerel and ate it, too. The gaunt survivors divided up the meager catch and baited two fishhooks with fragments of its flesh. ![]() He slowly moved his hand to seize the bird’s leg. Rickenbacker ordered each man, including the unbelievers, to read one as well. John Bartek pulled out a small copy of the New Testament from his pocket and read a passage. Hans Adamson, growled at the idea, but the others were less resistant. Copilot James Whittaker and Rickenbacker’s aide, the burly Col. Rickenbacker proposed a prayer meeting to the barely conscious men. Attributing his recovery to a supreme act of personal will, he was not about to give up now. He was no stranger to death: the year before, he had sustained such horrendous injuries in an air crash at Atlanta, including an eye popped out of its socket, that rescuers had left him for dead. Rickenbacker understood that time was running out. Morale plummeted early on, when shooting off all 18 emergency flares brought no responding plane. While the dark-haired De Angelis developed a tan, the lighter-complexioned Kaczmarczyk turned into a blistered, sobbing mess and began drinking seawater at night. Alex Kaczmarczyk had no choice but to lie painfully intertwined, with their legs either over one another’s shoulders or under their arms. Rickenbacker, wearing a civilian suit and a battered fedora, was relatively protected from the sun, but the salt water that sloshed into the rafts raised sores all over his body. Reynolds’s body turn pink, then red, and finally begin to blister. Rickenbacker had watched his radioman Sgt. Then the unrelenting Pacific sun had begun, noted Rickenbacker, “to burn into us and through us.” Several men had taken off their pants and thrown aside their coats and hats before the crash, thinking they might have to swim. It’s a phrase he utters in the brooding title track, making one believe that he’s experienced far too much loss in his life. “The unfortunate reality of getting older is you have to bury all the people you care about,” explains Rateliff. Instead, it became an inquiry into getting older and losing those close to you, but still choosing to carry on, albeit with fractured hope. No longer was it a bitter valentine about his failed marriage. Not surprisingly, after Swift’s death the scope of the album changed. I felt that Richard was everywhere,” says Rateliff. It was a very weird experience to be in a room that we’d laughed so much in. We went back to Richard’s studio to start the record. Patrick and Richard had always had my back, and it was great to work with James Barone, who is a longtime friend of mine. “It’s great when you get to work with other people that can see your vision and then see beyond it. Nathaniel enlisted Night Sweats drummer Patrick Meese and James Barone, friend of the band and monitor engineer, to help him. With Swift’s voice in his head, Rateliff set out to begin the album they had talked about at National Freedom Studio in Cottage Grove, OR. But in the end, what he really was doing was creating an homage to his friend. The movement certainly jogged something out of his restless subconscious, helping him address some big life questions - the ones that have stumped philosophers, statesmen and profound thinkers since time began, exploring the unsteady terrain of love and death. “I used to do physical labor for work, and that was really beneficial to my writing,” says Rateliff. ![]() Over the next few months, Rateliff tried to make sense of it all, feverishly writing songs fueled by strong coffee and an exercise bike. And soon after, on July 3rd, 2018, he passed away. In June, 2018 Swift was hospitalized for hepatitis. What Rateliff didn’t figure was that he’d be doing his solo album without his friend. We thought you can’t ever have too much Nilsson.” We were both big fans of Nilsson Sings Newman and A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night. He told me, ‘Man, I can’t wait to start working on the solo stuff.’ We had this vision of making it like a Nilsson album. “He’d send me ideas for it while I was working on the Night Sweats album. “Richard was really excited about working on it,” says Rateliff. The two frequently discussed working on a solo album for Rateliff - his first since 2013’s Falling Faster Than You Can Run, where the singer/songwriter’s more personal writing could find a home. His lost brother,” says Rateliff quietly. ![]() “Richard always would say I was like his twin. They bonded deeply when they worked on the Night Sweats’ 2015 debut album which was certified gold in 2017. The two were close, both having been raised in strict religious households and experiencing similarly wrenching crises over their faltering faith. The repeating chorus of the song - the lead-off track for And It’s Still Alright , his new solo album – vividly conveys weighty resignation and chilling finality: “I left feeling alone.”īut what began as a solo album about the painful slow dance of the unraveling of a relationship turned into something altogether different when Richard Swift, Rateliff’s longtime friend and producer of the Night Sweats’ two albums, fell ill from the complications of alcohol addiction. When the first words of “What A Drag” appeared out of the dry Arizona air, it was a stark realization that things had become irrevocably broken, and he would have to finally face the end of his 11-year relationship. ![]() He had touched on the topic in some of the songs on Tearing at the Seams, but with much more diehard-romantic ambivalence, still hanging onto a shred of hope that things might work out. Quieter, more reflective than the songs he’d written for the Night Sweats album, the piece that became “What a Drag” was a sad confirmation that his marriage had run aground. But another song managed to creep in that was unlike any of the one’s he’d composed for the Night Sweats’ second effort, signaling that he had other things he wanted to say. In Tucson, Rateliff did manage to write the last few songs for what became the Richard Swift-produced Tearing at the Seams. He thought he was actually sequestering himself to finish writing the last few songs for Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats’ follow-up album to their self-titled 2015 debut. When Nathaniel Rateliff went to a writing retreat outside of Tucson, Arizona, for 11 days in the spring of 2017, he didn’t know he was starting his third full-length solo album. 1/9/2024 0 Comments Resident evil 4 remake e3 2021![]() The original Resident Evil 2 came with two discs. Will one of the protagonists missions be unlockable and could we see new characters? I’m elated to say that Capcom seem to be nailing this, perfectly blending their survival horror masterpiece with acting talent that’s on-par with classic horror movies. One other important factor to me, was the acting and how it added to the games atmosphere (this was the only real weak element of the first 3 games at the time). Uniform or not, you don’t hesitate – Capcom have made sure the acting adds great intensity, building on the severity of the characters situations Play Alien Isolation.Non of this ‘HOLD YOUR FIRE, I’M A HUMAN’ bullshit, Leon. That alone ruins any believability in the characters I want to mention the characters look like preteens. I want to mention the characters look like preteens. All in all, I think that Resident Evil 2 Remake deserves all of the praise it's gotten and then some for putting Capcom back on the map and restoring the Resident Evil franchise to its former glory. The new and improved layout of the police station along with all of the updated puzzles and level designs does the original plenty of justice. The return of certain enemies allows for some truly dynamic gameplay sequences that make for some really memorable moments. Despite the game being third person and lacking the "tank controls" of the original, I think Capcom did an excellent job portraying Leon's first day on the job through the intentionally clunky controls and the zombies themselves being bullet sponges just like the classic titles. I think Resident Evil 2 Remake is a perfect entry in the series because it really cements this series as one of the greatest of all time. In the previous installments (mostly Resident evil 5 and 6) the non-stop action made it a little bit difficult to really embrace its history as a top dog in the survival horror genre. I think the most impressive feat that this game accomplished was it's ability to really go all in on that horror atmosphere that has been missing from the last few titles. Fast forward almost 18 years later, It'd finally be my chance to play a resident evil title on my own. 1/9/2024 0 Comments Terance mann author![]() So one is free to believe whatever one likes about the fate of Terence Mann without impact on the overarching story. I don’t believe the “Rapture of Terence Mann” (or anything relating to the Mann character directly) is the focus of the film at all. That said, it’s still (as I said) open to interpretation. While there are certainly parallels, I don’t believe there is a direct cross-reference between Salinger and Mann, as that element of the original novel was substantially changed. Phil Alden Robinson changed many things from the novel to the screen, and in so doing, concentrated the story more upon Ray and his father than anything having to do with Salinger in the source material. This may be true of the novel, but the film adaptation is quite another creature.
